Ok so I kind of need help-- I'm supposed to go register for my baby shower in the next couple of weeks and I must confess that I have NO IDEA what to register for. So all you professional moms out there can you PLEASE give me some advice on what I should go register for. Thanks a ton!!!

10 holla backs:
First of all, let me tell you what you think you need but really don't. You will get so much crap that you think will be great and then will end up tossing. For instance:
-a diaper genie. Totally over rated. Just tie that poopy diaper in a Wal-mart bag and put it out in the garage trash. It seems great at first but then it comes time to unload that thing, filled with like 30 diapers, so it's poopy diaper stank times 30, they break all the time, the refills are crazy expensive, etc, etc, etc. My husband literally chucked our off of our balcony one day, he hated it that much.
-a baby wipe warmer. I know two different people who have had fires caused by these things. And you live in freaking hot AZ. A cool wipe to the bottom sounds good to me. TMI?
-a swing. Once that kiddo comes, test her out on someone else's first to see if she even likes it. Because if she doesn't (and a lot of babies don't--like mine) you'll have this massive piece of junk cluttering up your living space and you'll curse it every time you stub your toe on it, which will be every time you pass it because the clumsiness that comes with pregnancy never really goes away even after you've given birth.
-massive amounts of toys. Seriously, kids like spoons, bowls, paper towl rolls, old remote controls or old cell phones, just stuff you already have.
-a baby tub. Even with the hammock like insert, my kids always had trouble with these and it was always scary, because they slip or slide or lean and bathing an infant is stressful as it is. A simple foam pad works so much better. It's so much more secure.
-an expensive, fancy diaper bag. It will get filthy and totally thrashed. Quick. There are cute, cheap ones out there. Trust me, you'll go through diaper bags like no other because they get so nasty.
-a bouncy seat. Seriously, what's the difference between that and her car seat? Some bouncy seats jiggle but it always made my babies spit up. Again, waste of space.
(I'm totally sounding like a BA HUMBUG, I know but I've found that kids are major minimalists and the less junk you can accumulate, the better.)
Things that ARE useful:
-a bottle brush to get the gunk out of the bottom of the bottle
-Dr. Brown's bottles (I swear by these - the little dohickee inside helps eliminate air bubbles, which causes stomach aches, which causes cranky babies)
-a Boppi
-Graco travel system--car seat/stroller
-an umbrella stroller on top of the big honking Graco stroller. You'll find that in a lot of situations, you'll need something lighter and smaller to get around tight fitting places at the mall
-a formula divider
-an exer-saucer. great for having her hang out in this in the bathroom with you while you take a shower.
-board books
-a pack and play. This will be needed when she gets older and you travel or put her to bed at some one else's house. They are great. I've used mine again and again.
-These two books "The Baby Whisperer" and "Baby Wise..(something about a guide to getting your baby to sleep). I've also heard that "The Happiest Baby on the Block" is good, too but I've never read it
-some kind of toy with a mirror on it.
-a really good glider. I love mine.
That's all I can think of off of the top of my head. WooWee! Very exciting!
Ok, I just wrote a novel.
I could tell you many things that you will "need". But I will tell you one really great product you MUST buy...Triple Paste diaper rash cream. It's a little expensive, but worth your money. Your child will NEVER have a red hiney!
okay, so im not a mom, BUT im so happy i found your blog! i was just thinking about you the other day because i ran into all the old softball coaches, including coach wood! haha. it was awesome. but im glad you are so happily married and are expecting a baby! that is so crazy but so fun! yaay blogging friends :)
Um Diddo to Annie for sure!
I have 2 swings, so you can borrow one and see if she likes it. Kylee hated both. She was a pill. Oh, she's still a pill. Glider for sure! Um, let's see. It's been a while since I had a baby. Burp clothes are a must have also. They catch the milk that tries to slide under their chin and settle in their rolls. They are good for catching puke too. Hopefully she won't be a spitter upper. I also love, love Grins and Giggles bath soap. It smells the best by far! Only draw back, you can't get it at Target. I like Playtex nurser bottles and Wal-Mart/Target brand diapers and wipes. I can't think of much else right now. When I do, I'll let you know.
As I was cleaning out the bathtub today I remembered bath toys. Do not register for them. Espcially the ones that squeeze water. As water sits in them mold grows in them and then you squeeze and nasty mold flies everywhere! It's so NASTY! Why did no one tell me this? I figured it out the hard way. Yep, nasty mold in the tub swimming with my babies. NASTY! Household items such as sppons and bowls work good for bathtime toys. When you're done they just go in your dishwasher. So much better than mold for sure!
One thing I totally regret doing is buying stupid little stuff and not saving my money for the big stuff. For example, I thought Parker needed 100 different outfits but what I needed was a nice dresser. So he has the outfits and I don't have a dresser! I would say, buy a few nice outfits and save your money. They grow too fast. Another thing, is if you get gift cards... SAVE THEM... I did with Parker and as he got older then I would buy something that was around his age. I actually loved my bouncy seat and swing. Both of my babies loved them. You're more than welcome to borrow it until I have my baby! The nice thing is that when it comes to registering is you can take it back and don't be afraid too. You need to get what you want and like... I would say is buy a bumbo...They are so great. I seriously LOVE THEM. Also, this is my opinion. Borrow a stroller from someone. (LIKE ME)I totally regret getting my stroller because now I will never use it. I will have 3 kids and I am onto a double stroller. Plus, when they get so big you don't want a huge stroller, you want a light one to take around. So, you can have my stroller...It may not match but it's free! Find what works and what you like and do it! You're the mom and FINALLY You're in charge! Good Luck!!! I wish and I kind of did go in the the mind-set of "Will this last me through all of my children" and if it did then I would register for it!
K I have to say that we have a diaper geanie and we LOVE it. It never stinks and is so easy and so user friendly. The refills are like 5 bucks each but it lasts for like a month so it is so worth it. One of my friends doesn't have one and her babies room always smelled and Jaxon's doesn't smell (exept for the first 5 minutes after you change it). That is my personal preference, I hate smelly rooms so I recommend it highly. Also don't buy clothes or toys like the others said, you will get plenty and see what she likes. Jaxon's fav toys are toothbrushes and cell phones! haha. Just register for anything that you think would work for you- if you don't use it for this baby, one baby down the road might want it and use it more. Good luck!
Hey Shawna! I swear the last time I saw you you had no hair, and here you are having a baby!!! Crazy! Cute blog and really cute baby room. I love my boppy, bumbo, exersaucer and the book "baby wise" (the concepts I have found to be amazing, though I'm not a die hard). Really, you should register for a nanny because you'll just want to sleep and sleep and sleep:)
Hate to tell you this, but every baby shower I have ever been to for a baby girl, the only gifts you will receive are clothes, clothes, and more clothes, and then some cutesy blankest, bows, and burp rags. So you might not get alot of the useful stuff because everyone goes with the intent to buy something useful, but walks out with a bag full of pink dresses. But if you get lucky and do get what you registered for, definitely register for a bouncy seat (not at all the same as a car seat and was the only place my kid would sleep the first few months), a boppy only if you plan to nurse not really needed if not, a diaper genie because it does work and is not expensive, even if you have to replace the whole thing, wait on the saucer until she can hold her head up. A front carrier comes in really handy when they want to be held all day, but you have other things to do and need your hands. Cloth diapers make the best burp cloths (the pre-folded ones), bibs are always handy especially when the drooling starts. A nice car seat that will last you a few kids, so don't get one that is all pink, and lastly register for whatever you want just because you can and it's fun. Good luck!
